Alcoholism and drug addiction are highly prevalent Deaddiction problem in modern society. It has been proved that more than 10% of the world population is suffering from addictions of any type or combination of addictions. In comparatively poorer countries, the society is more prone to addiction, hence making the percentage of addiction slightly higher as compared to other world. Now a days,  Alcoholism is considered as a disease by WHO and American Medical Association (AMA).

Addiction (to alcohol or drugs) has certain characteristics. Details vary from person to person, although the basic symptoms and patterns are more or less predictable in most cases:

Primary Disease : Here problem lies within the alcoholic and problem is not caused by any external influences. Modern time researchers have identified a genetic factor in the disease and scientists have isolated certain chemicals or neuro transmitters in the brain, which are directly related. In these cases, Parents usually blame their child's “bad company”, even spouses blame of “bad company” of friends. Also Alcoholics or drug addicts themselves give lot of excuses, like over stress at work or too little love and understanding at home, not cordial relationship with spouse. Here addiction is identified by denial - within the alcoholic and within family members. In these cases, both try to justify, rationalize and blame people, places and circumstances. Both will adopt various control strategies to reduce or stop his habit. The alcoholic or drug addict resolves to drink only in the evenings, or only on weekends, or sometimes on festive like Holi, New Year etc, or some times shift from whisky to beer. But none of the above control strategy works.

Progressive Disease : Addict starts with an occasional glass of beer as a fashion, or some time as a social status, alcoholic or addict needs increasing quantities to achieve the same' high', since the body develops tolerance towards the drink or drug. There is gradual increase in intake of alcohol.

Family Disease : After affects of drug Deaddiction and alcoholism can be seen on the whole family, especially the spouse, parents and children. They all become victims of Deaddiction either directly or indirectly, who do not take drinks or drugs. We can say that addict makes victim not only of himself, but of the entire family, we may say that making victim to the entire society. The worst affected are kids or younger ones in family. Family members experience similar negative feelings as the addict- hurt, confusion, fear, anger, shame, insecurity guilt, and hope followed by despair.

Even behavioral patterns of family members of victims become more or less similar. Victim tries various control strategies to reduce or stop drinking, the family members also begin to lie, manipulate and deceive in their vain attempts to control or cover up his habit. The family members are in desperate need of proper help, support and understanding.

Incurable Disease: It is Incurable, although Treatable. Diabetes needs a regular prolonged treatment to keep the disease in check, like that Deaddiction also requires prolonged treatment. An abstinent alcoholic cannot take a drink and hopes to continue a controlled pattern. He will inevitably return to obsessive and compulsive drinking. Total abstinence is the only way to cure it.
